1st Doctor : William Hartnell
The 1st Doctor's Life, Companions, and Travels
The 1st Doctor is a tetchy, eccentric old man who steals a TARDIS and travels through both time and space in the universe. Occasionally stubborn, aloof, and absent minded, he does eventually begin to mellow out with each and every companion he takes with him in the TARDIS. Even though he was the youngest form of the Doctor, he looked the oldest.
When the Doctor and Susan first took on companions (Ian and Barbara), the Doctor acted elderly, irritable, and was prone to lose his temper quickly. He also didn't like fools and didn't suffer them gladly either. As the first Doctor, he kept a lot that we do know about him today as a secret from his companions. But as time always does, it worn on the Doctor and he began to trust and admire and befriend his companions more, one at a time, until he became like a "grandfather, to whom everyone loved".
After Susan left the Tardis, the Doctor began to take on a lot more companions and some even argue that he did this to try to fill in the hole in his life after leaving behind Susan.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend :
William Hartnell was the first actor to play the role of the Doctor. Born in 1908, Hartnell was a well-known screen actor. But his reputation was for playing the "tough guy" roles. He was an unlikely but inspired choice for the part of the mysterious Doctor.
Suffering from illness and bad health, he left the role in 1966. He returned for the tenth anniversary story The Three Doctors in 1972/3, but was too frail to work in the studio with the other two Doctors (2nd and 3rd Doctor). William Hartnell died in April of 1975. He was 67 years old.
